Coriole Vineyards

  • Reserve wine release - 1 October 2024

    lloyd reserve shiraz

Shiraz is a great tradition in McLaren Vale, dating back to the 1850s. Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard at Coriole that was planted either late 19th century or early 20th century - some records indicate as early as 1875. The first Lloyd Reserve wine was released in 1989.

The soil and roots are extremely deep and generally no irrigation is required. The wine is matured in French oak for approximately 18 months and then receives 18+ months in bottle before release.

"A shiraz of depth, power and impressive precision. Palate-staining dark fruit, licorice, kirsch and smoked meats. There is ample oak, and yet despite the tannic mettle and powerful extract, this is a wine of considerable poise and grace. In other words, it doesn't feel heavy. Superb length and glimpses of the many layers as they unravel with each visit back to the glass. Best after 2028. 96 points"

    willunga 1920 reserve shiraz

This 2-acre vineyard was planted in 1920 in the foothills of Willunga. The soils are deep, gravelly loams and this block shows beautiful old vine complexity with a suppleness of the rich Willunga soils.

The Willunga 1920 Shiraz is a very different wine to those produced from the Coriole estate. The nose shows blueberry and sage with hints of charcuterie and lavender. The palate is very soft and rich, with flavours of blackberry and black olive, beautifully framed by very fine tannin and finished by a floral rose lift.

    rubato reserve fiano

The grape variety Fiano originates from a province near Campania, east of Naples. Fiano was selected by Coriole when looking for a new southern Italian variety to grow in McLaren Vale, with the first vineyard planted in 2001. The first Australian fiano was released by Coriole from the 2005 vintage. Perfectly suited to our climate, fiano is now the largest growing whites category in McLaren Vale. In 2018 we first produced our Rubato Fiano, which celebrates fiano's true textural qualities.

Rubato Reserve Fiano is limited to three bottles per customer.

"Perhaps the finest fiano outside Campania and even more impressive than the stellar offering from last vintage. Scents of orange pastille, quince paste, candied lemon rind and pistachios with a touch of fennel and white flowers. The texture is medium-bodied and succulent, with salty freshness and a leesy note. The finish is exquisite and very long. This is an excellent wine. Drink or hold. 96 points"

"This is a stellar bottle. Is it the finest example of the grape on our shores? I’d wager so. The making is deceptively simple, but in that lies the beauty. The right site, expertly judged picking, fruit selection, phenolic extraction and time in barrel are key – a quietly confident stewardship. There’s a front-to-back seamlessness suffused with a mineral, sea-salt-inflected quality, oak a cohesive ghostwriter. Corella pear, tangerine peel, red apple, wildflowers, soft herbs, crystallised lemon, floral nectar and lemon pith lead to a lemon barley water/tonic grip and crushed rock minerality. Intense, effortlessly layered and vibrant, this is superb. 96 points"

    mary kathleen reserve cabernet sauvignon

Mary Kathleen Reserve Cabernet is named after Lloyd family matriarch, Mary Kathleen "Molly" Lloyd, one of Coriole’s founders. It is produced from our 1986 planting on the Coriole Estate, with the wine was first produced in 1992.

The resulting wine is a savoury and elegant expression, a long and full flavoured cabernet which will cellar well for up to 20 years.

"After grenache, it is McLaren Vale cabernet that I enjoy the most of the Vale's reds. The iodine brininess that adds an additional element to the savoriness and gritty feel of the tannins is a winning regional stamp. The sage, bay leaves, black olives and lilt of garden herbs confer lift. There is ample power, yet good cabernet here is faithful to the variety with just a little more roundness. The case for drinking even more of it is a strong one. An excellent example. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. 96 points"

"From 35-year-old vines, 18 months in French oak (20% new). This is a relatively sumptuous rendition of cabernet, a wine with cascading mulberry, blackcurrant and plum fruit notes, but also one with bell-clear leafy and fragrant varietal definition. Cigar box notes, cassia, cedar, cracked pepper and black tea complex further. Eminently approachable, this also has the drive, verve and stuffing for a long life. 95 points"

    vita reserve sangiovese

Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole Vineyards with the first plantings in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to Shiraz, the champion of McLaren Vale. It has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.

The Vita Reserve Sangiovese is a selection of the best performing sangiovese vineyard, interestingly different vintages favour different vineyards. The Vita Reserve is a small bottling that is only produced in exceptional vintages.

"From original 1985 sangiovese plantings, with 20 months maturation in old oak. Some classic fresh and dried cherry notes, both red and black, warm earth and dried hardy Mediterranean herbs, that extra time in oak upping the savoury stakes, tannins characteristically firm, drying in a sapid, food-friendly way but succulent in delivery. It doesn’t really look anything like Chianti, as an obvious bookmark reference, and that’s a good thing. Like the other Italo-Oz reds at this address, it has its own charming personality, referential but not observant. 95 points"
